A shocking revelation has emerged, raising serious concerns about the security measures in place at iconic sites of democracy and human rights. The Magna Carta, a powerful symbol of social justice, is being guarded by CCTV cameras supplied by a Chinese company with a controversial past.
Dahua Technology, based in Hangzhou, China, boasts about its role in protecting the Magna Carta, but its involvement has sparked outrage and controversy. The company's technology has allegedly aided in the persecution of Uyghurs in Xinjiang, China, and has been exploited by Russia during its invasion of Ukraine.
Campaigners, including the World Uyghur Congress (WUC) and Don't Fund Russian Army, have called for the removal of Dahua's cameras from the Magna Carta's location at Salisbury Cathedral. They argue that these cameras, and those of another Chinese company, Hikvision, which monitor the Parthenon temple in Greece, pose a significant risk.
But here's where it gets controversial: the WUC claims that Dahua's involvement in facial recognition systems designed to target Uyghurs is a direct contradiction to the values the Magna Carta represents.
"It is painful to see such technologies protecting a symbol of democracy and freedom," the WUC stated in a letter to the cathedral's security head.
The cathedral, however, maintains that its security systems and suppliers are regularly reviewed, working with external advisors.
Furthermore, reports suggest that both Dahua and Hikvision's cameras have vulnerabilities that allowed them to be hacked by Russia during its invasion of Ukraine. Oleksii Kuprienko, from Don't Fund Russian Army, highlights incidents where surveillance footage appeared to be accessed and even broadcast online during Russian missile strikes.
"This footage can be a powerful tool for analysis and intimidation," Kuprienko explained.
A Ukrainian MP, Grigory Mamka, confirmed that cameras made by these companies are being removed due to security concerns.
