Kilauea's Lava Fountaining: Episode 41 Erupts in Halemaumau Crater (2026)

Kilauea's lava fountain eruption, Episode 41, began at 11:10 a.m. in Halemaumau crater, marking a continuation of the ongoing eruption that started on December 23, 2024. This event has been captured by a U.S. Geological Survey webcam, providing a visual of the lava fountain reaching impressive heights.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports tephra fall in nearby areas, including Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Volcano Village, Mauna Loa Estates, and Ohia Estates. As of 12:10 p.m., the lava fountains were over 1,640 feet tall, with weak southern winds carrying gas and solid material to the north. This activity is confined to Halemaumau crater, but Hawaii County Civil Defense has issued a warning.

The warning advises residents to avoid the area due to elevated gas levels, tephra (fine glass particles that can irritate the skin and eyes), and light winds that may affect downwind communities. It also suggests taking precautions on roadways, as tephra can reduce visibility and cause traffic congestion. The lava fountain grew to over 1,000 feet within an hour of its start, following a period of low-level activity, including weak spattering from the north vent on January 21-22 and overflows from the same vent on January 22.

Stay tuned for more updates on this volcanic activity, and remember to take necessary precautions for your safety.
