Puerto Rico: A Beginner's Paradise, Unveiling the Magic of Old San Juan, El Yunque, and Rincon
Unveiling the Exotic Charm of Puerto Rico
Imagine a place where familiar meets exotic, where sugar-sand beaches and tropical rainforests coexist. That's Puerto Rico, a hidden gem just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the U.S. mainland.
A Journey to Discover
My recent trip to Puerto Rico was an eye-opener. Despite its proximity to the U.S., I felt like I was worlds away. With its rich history, stunning natural wonders, and vibrant culture, Puerto Rico welcomed a record 7.5 million visitors in 2024, and I was determined to explore its every corner.
Exploring the Island's Treasures
My itinerary included Rincon, a surfer's paradise on the west coast; San Juan, a cosmopolitan city with old-world allure; and El Yunque, a tropical rainforest teeming with life. I also ventured to Vieques, a small island off the mainland, a story for another day.
San Juan: A City of Contrasts
San Juan, with its bustling metro area, is the gateway to Puerto Rico. Old San Juan, the heart of the city, is a time capsule. Founded by the Spanish in 1521, it's the second oldest city in the Western Hemisphere. Here, you'll find the magnificent Castillo San Felipe del Morro, or El Morro, a fort that guarded the island for centuries. Its stone walls and spiral staircases offer a glimpse into the past.
Another gem is Castillo San Cristobal, built to protect the city from land attacks. Together, these forts, now part of the National Park Service, tell the story of Puerto Rico's rich history.
Beyond the Forts
Old San Juan is more than just forts. It's a maze of historic streets and alleyways, lined with charming shops, restaurants, and bars. We wandered, stopping to cool off and indulge. From the vibrant Cafe El Punto to the elegant Carli's Fine Bistro & Piano, each spot offered a unique experience.
El Yunque: Nature's Paradise
About 30 miles east of San Juan lies El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. Spanning 29,000 acres, it's a nature lover's dream. We hiked trails that seemed to touch the clouds, admired waterfalls, and discovered an incredible variety of ferns.
We explored the Mount Britton Tower trail, offering breathtaking views of both the Atlantic and the Caribbean. We also tested the waters at Juan Diego Falls and circled the historic Bano Grande, a swimming pool built in the 1930s.
Rincon: Beach Paradise
Rincon, a small town with a big heart, offered a different kind of paradise. With its sandy beaches in every direction, it's a surfer's dream and a swimmer's delight. We explored it all, from Sandy Beach to Domes Beach, with its unique connection to a long-closed nuclear reactor.
We watched novice surfers at Maria's Beach and snorkeled at Steps Beach, part of the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, where we were amazed by the colorful underwater world.
