This condition first came to light in 2021, and individuals afflicted have experienced a troubling array of symptoms, including memory difficulties, issues with balance, alterations in behavior, involuntary muscle spasms, and episodes of severe pain.
In 2022, an investigation carried out by the health department concluded that there was no substantiated evidence of a cluster of cases despite examining 48 patients, the majority of whom were referred by a singular neurologist, Dr. Alier Marrero. However, as more individuals began to report similar symptoms, the number of affected residents soared to 400. Responding to growing public concern, Premier Susan Holt’s Liberal party made a commitment during the 2024 provincial election to reopen the inquiry into these mysterious cases.
